Laparoscopic Fundoplication Surgerywas first started at Gujrat & Western India by Prof. Dr. Sunil Popat at Nidhi Hospital, Ahmedabad.
Laparoscopic Fundoplicationis done for the treatment of moderate to large size Hiatus Hernia, Resistant GERD, complications of GERD such as Stricture, Barrett’s Esophagus, etc. GERD patients can develop recurrent Upper GI bleeding due to erosive Esophagitis.
Laparoscopic Fundoplicationis done at Nidhi Hospital since 1998 and more than 600 successful surgeries had already been performed. This is a key hole surgery in which 4–5 keyholes are made and laparoscopic camera &instruments are inserted through them.
Lower end Esophagus, G-E Junction and Upper Stomach are mobilised laparoscopically. Hiatus defect is closed with the help of special sutures, and the fundus of the stomach is wrapped around the lower end of the esophagus — this is known as Fundoplication.
The surgery is quite safe and standardized. Short-term and long-term results are very good. Overall patient satisfaction index is very high.
Laparoscopic Hiatus Hernia repair and Fundoplication is also indicated for symptomatic Para-esophageal hernias. These patients also get very good results. Sometimes in Hiatus Hernia, when the defect is large, Hiatus repair may require use of a mash.
